Athens Art
3/7/09
Got back from Athens, Greece the other day. Athens is nuts. Full of junkies, anarchists, and tons of great street art.
I don't know what I expected, but I guess when you see all the tourist shit you think you are going to walk into a quaint little town with tons of white buildings and everybody drinking ouzo and eating feta cheese. Don't get me wrong, that is part of Greece too, but for me, I like it dirty. I started to look around for the shitty parts of town. The parts of town that were near lawless. I found plenty, and along the way I found some amazing art too. For the most part, Athens is an aerosol playground. The cops don't really seem to care what the fuck you do.
Peep some of the flicks I took while I was there:

Always interesting, C215

There was tons of anarchy graffiti, but it wasnt some pseudo punk rock type of shit. These dudes were the real deal. The week before I got there, they took an AK-47 and opened up fire on a police station, then did it again the week later. They also set fires to banks and multinational chain stores.

BOING

Alexandros Vasmoulakis
This guy has some massive fucking murals everywhere around Greece. Gotta give him props for getting up as much as he was. It's hard to see, but there are little bits of fabric glued onto the walls as part of this piece.

This was on the other side of the wall from where the Twins has painted. Weather claimed part of it, but it's still dope.

More Anarchy graf

This was a mural dedicated to Alexandros Grigoropoulos who was shot by the cops back in December. His death was what sparked the Greek riots that lasted for weeks.
