Shameless plug - Peat in Chicago

2/25/09

It's been almost 8 years since I lived in Chicago...this will be my first major exhibit of works in this town except for a few small group shows since.

I will be featuring my Latest EYEZ series along with works by two other Stencils artists from Chicago and Seattle!

Show Info:
Stencil art has a long, long history....like ancient. The history spans from pre-historic times (where the hand may have been the very first stencil pattern) through Edo period Japan, into Europe where Picasso, Matisse and many others experimented with "pochoir" (French for stencil) and onto the streets around the globe in more modern times.
For our next exhibit we take a look at three artists working with stencils today. St. Louis -based Peat Wollaeger brings us a character-rich cartoon-inspired style with a graffiti edge and will be featuring his latest stencil series "EYEZ," Chicago artist David Soukup explores the use of stencils to create intricate architecture-inspired works and Seattle-based Jonathan Wakuda Fischer mixes Japanese themes with modern culture and vibrant colors.
The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2009 from 6 until 10pm. All three artists will be in attendance.

Above: Huge Site Update

2/21/09

A palindrome by Above. Read this backwards...

One of my utmost favorite street artist is at it again, this time with a huge site update that will keep you entertained for hours on end. Update includes great videos, previously unseen work, stuff from the past and beautiful words by the man himself to really make each picture come to life. My personal favorite? The palindrome Above. See what I did there? ;)

Nasan Tur: "Komunismus Soziallismus Kapietalismus"

Today the gf and I stumbled into Nasan Tur's (cv) exhibition at Tanas by accident: we were asking directions to a Bill Viola exhibition (Bill Viola "Transfiguration", Haunch of Venison, Heidestrasse 46, www.haunchofvenison.com) and decided to have a look around. I remembered seeing reviews in several magazines and at least someone I know personally held Nasan Tur in pretty high regard.
He seems to enjoy taking jabs at society either by supplying willing marchers with subversive backpacks, or by providing those who always wanted to make a point with a speaker system, or simply by continuously summersaulting in crowed spaces. He also appears to be very fond of bad spelling and taking the occasional bath in a puddle.

Taking photos was kindly allowed by the gallery so here are a few examples.

"Time for Revollusion" (2008)

"Komunismus Soziallismus Kapietalismus" (2008)
Oddly enough even though all three words are obviously spelled wrong I found it hard to actually spot the errors once I was facing the rather huge letters.

"Speaker-Backpack, Cooking-Backpack, Demonstration-Backpack, Sabotage-Backpack, Fan-Backpack" (2006)

"Passport" (2000)
I really like this one (quote from the website):
"Applying for a German passport, Nasan Tur let his mustache grow over several months, fitting the cliche of the Turk in Germany. This small alteration in his appearance led to a complete change in perception of and reaction to him from the outside world in his daily life. In the circles in which he normally moved he was suddenly no longer welcome, was seen more an embarassment, and from a female point of view, unsexy, whereas he was greeted with "Salem Aleykum" when walking past Turkish cafes and reaped
enthusiastic compliments from aunts and uncles. Nasan Tur had a photo taken with his Turkish mustache and gave it to the authorities for his German passport. Now Tur is the owner of a German passport with
a photo of a cliche-Turk, which he actually is not. Tur thematizes in this work how far one is pushed into certain socially defined identities which one must then fullfil. The German passport that accompanies him on his travels presents him thus at each passport control."

"Like New" (2007)
Old shoes colored by street shoeblacks.

"Somersaulting Man" (2001-2004)
Four digital videos shot in Istanbul, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Paris. These stills seem to be from Tokyo.

Kaws Solo show in LA-opens tomorrow

2/20/09

Kaws' first LA solo show opens tomorrow at Honor Frazer (2622 S. La Cienega Blvd., Venice, CA 90034). He also curated a show at Royal T (8910 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232), which is an awesome spot if you like to combine tea with art and Japanese cosplay...who doesn't?! The two shows open simultaneously and are pretty close to one another, so it might make a nice double header before getting rowdy later in the evening.

For those of you lucky kids that have a large amount of disposable income while the rest of the country is starving, Kaws created a $68 t-shirt for the occasion(s) that will be on-sale at the Royal T show. Yippee!

When a bad quality cup of coffee at a Moscow chain cafe sets you back almost the price of a meal in Australia, it suddenly become clear why you see so many hot nubile young ladies on the arms of ageing, unattractive yet well-heeled men. Failing that solution, here are some reasonably priced, chilled non-pretentious places that play good music I have found:

FAQ cafe (Metro: Ohotniy Ryad)
Kitaisky Lyotchik (Chinese Pilot) Bar (in a basement, very indie/arty crowd, live music) (Metro: Kitai Gorod)
Proekt OGI (Metro: Chistye Prudy)
Propaganda Cafe/Bar Club (Metro: Kitai Gorod)
Artefaq (funky art cafe/restaurant/bar/gallery with crazy decor and video installations in the toilets!) (Moscow)http://www.artefaq.ru/ (Metro: Ohotny Ryad)
Kult Club/cafe/bar (Metro: Kitai Gorod/ Taganskaya) They play DnB on Sunday evenings.
Solyanka Club and restuarant(Metro: Kitai Gorod) They have a pretty sweet hip hop night every Thursday.

I also like meeting new people, using complicated words, exploring abandoned buildings and learning Russian. Oh.... and I do enjoy good vodka or red wine, and walnut baklawa - that stuff is amazing.

What inspires you?: (in alphabetical order!) architecture, asymmetry, cartography, collaboration, decay, geometry, German Expressionism, inconography, people with passion and drive, scientific diagrams, skeletons, social realist art, solitude, spontaneity, typography.
What does the future hold for you?:

Probable:

- some new collabs
- more forays into the Russian street art scene
- a trip to Berlin
- late nights and early mornings
- a mural for someone with more money and wallspace than taste
- more amazing abandoned building exploration
- my continued bewilderment as to the reasons why I continue to live in this perverse yet oddly attractive place

Improbable:

-I will master the pronunciation of cыр (cheese) and лось (moose)
-We won't have the hot water in our neighborhood turned off for 2 or 3 weeks while they fix the pipes
- I will turn to oil landscape painting or 'artistic nudes'
- fur and stripper boots will suddenly become unpopular amongst the dyevushki (girls) of Moscow
- my friends in Australia will stop thinking that I am living in a desolate wintery wasteland with huts or igloos
- the government will start taxing vodka and cigarettes

CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE - MARTYN REED

Name:
Martyn Reed (Nuart)

City:
Stavanger

Country:
Norway

What do you do?:
Procrastinate. Come up with creative Ideas that I think are beneficial to the community at large

Your website:
www.numusic.no & www.nuart.no

Your favorite artists?:
Not sure about favourite, but those I have a deep respect for include Bast, Parla, Choe, Banksy, Darius & Downey, Herakut, Graffiti Research Lab, Skewville, Swoon, Supine, Leon Reid, Charlie Krafft, Blu, REVS, Fairey....amongst many others. I like the ethos you know. I’ve always leaned a bit more towards “concept” than straight up figurative or abstract art, I love to see a spot that’s bombed with random tags and paste ups that has it’s own natural frame.
Suggested websites, books, galleries, or places:

Books :There’s a tonne of books out their covering street art but it seems 99% of them are produced by publishers that think we don’t read ! Here’s 50 pictures of street art in Barcelona..zzzzz. Waaay too much of this. A few diverse examples of great reads include the catalogue for Beautiful Losers which has some interesting essays, The Art of Rebellion 1 & 2 are first class, for graff, I’d recommend Writers, Urban Calligraphy and Beyond by Markus Mai, an unusual look at Graffiti’s influence and styles & The Adventures of Darius and Downey by Leon Reid and Brad Downey for something a little different.

DVD’s : For us “Screen-agers”, film is probably more relevant than books. Anyone interested in this scene should check out “Public Discourse”, a truly inspirational documentary that gets up close and personal with a massively diverse bunch of artists working on the streets of NYC. Graffiti Research Lab’s the first season, Next, Bomb It, and the more obvious Style Wars are a must.
Galleries : I don’t think that there are any galleries that have consistently done this scene justice. A few shows yes, the only galleries that I think are really relevant are those run by artists, Stolen Space in London springs to mind. The best “gallery” by far is the street, a close second if you don’t live in an urban metropolis has to be sites like woostercollective.com

Websites : I’m hooked on Ted.com, an inspirational website based on the annual Ted conference , an event that brings some of the worlds best thinkers together from the worlds of Technology, Design and Entertainment. Sounds a bit boring I know, but they’re challenged to give the talk of their lives in just 18 minutes. Produces some amazing results. The site puts the talks out free for distribution.

I’d highly recommend this particular film. Ken Robinson on “ Do schools kill creativity”, I think we all know that they do. But to explain this in 18 minutes and keep it entertaining is something very very special.

What do you have a passion for?:
Finding thinks like the video above, new experiences.

What inspires you?:
Cities, Artists, Creative acts that are obviously a labour of love. My kid. Ideas. Selfless acts and ideas. Being active and playful.

What does the future hold for you?:
Near future = more art in my life, really looking forward to introducing, watching and participating in making things with my 3 year old kid !

Pablo - Jabberjaw

2/5/09

One of the best things about growing up in Southern California was concerts. I guess a lot of people mighta had the chance to catch bigger touring acts but around Los Angeles, you had those bands in addition to all the younger bands who headed west to get their start. Many of the young bands heading to LA in the early nineties played at the legendary Jabberjaw (learn more about them here).

I was introduced to the artist simply known as Pablo from his concert posters he did for the venue. Each time I went to a show I'd check the wall to see if they had any new Pablo posters for sale. The best was when he made a poster for the show you were at, like Laughing Hyenas. I was a big fan but finding any information on him or where to see or buy his art has been near impossible. Every once in a while you'd see posters pop up on ebay but it's hard to search for "Pablo art" and find anything relevant. Here's a Pablo thread that helps to shed a lil light on him but from 2000 on, it doesn't seem like anyone has seen him. Let's hope he's alright and making art somewhere. Enjoy the shots!

AP puts the squeeze on Shepard Fairey for infringement

NEWSFLASH! Shep didn't create that Obama portrait strictly from his own imagination? Wha?! How could this be?!

I'm guessing the Associated Press had never heard of Shepard Fairey until they started noticing their opposition's propaganda popping up all over the country...errr...world. Shep admits that the iconic portrait was derived from an AP photo by Manny Garcia, but their issue seems to be whether it is safe to use under "Fair Use" and whether he needs to pay.

Man, if the AP is going to track down every artist that has derived artwork from one of their photos, we're ALL in trouble.

Supertouch has a great rundown of the situation...

February 2009 marks the beginning of a new era for us.

Over the past few years, we have traversed the globe, and met some dope artists, organizers, galleries, and people in general. It's like we are one big family, only we dont get together over holidays.

We feel like it is only fitting that we fold this misfit family into a mix thats fitting for the internet. We have decided to do this by making the Sabotaz blog a community of select people from around the world.

So from this point forward, we will be featuring art, shows, and events from around the world. Over the next few days, we will be featuring a short Q&A with our new contributors. We have operatives in Kula Lumpur, Paris, Brussels, Melbourne, and almost a dozen other countries.

Entropa by Dave Cherny

A new art installation going on display at the European Council building in Brussels has angered EU members with its lampoons of national stereotypes.

Entropa portrays Bulgaria as a toilet, Romania as a Dracula theme-park and France as a country on strike.

The Czech Republic, which holds the EU presidency, thought it had commissioned work from 27 European artists.

But it turned out to have been entirely completed by Czech artist David Cerny and two associates.

The eight-tonne mosaic is held together by snap-out plastic parts similar to those used in modelling kits.

The Netherlands is shown as series of minarets submerged by a flood - a possible reference to the nation's simmering religious tensions.

Germany is shown as a network of motorways vaguely resembling a swastika, while the UK - criticised by some for being one of EU's most eurosceptic members - is absent from Europe altogether. Source.

I like to walk on the streets of Paris hunting stencils through the Butte aux Cailles in the 13th arrondissement, the blind alleys of the 11th and Belleville in the 20th. Unfortunately I prefer the streets of Paris than the galleries.

What does the future hold for you?:
Stencilhistoryx.com is a blog specialized in stencil art I hope to turn to a benchmark in the street art world. It will be soon completed by an online stencil store that will present some original artworks and amazing pieces.

Inside Programmable Road Signs Print E-mail
Written by Atmosfear 1337
Tuesday, 20 January 2009
How many times have you driven by an electronic road sign like one of these?

This is the ADDCO portable sign. Today, you see what is on the inside, and how they are programmed to display important information.

*** WARNING YOU SHOULD NEVER TAMPER WITH THESE SIGNS ***

1. The access panel on the sign is generally protected by a small lock, but often are left unprotected. Upon opening the access panel you can see the display electronics.

2. The black control pad is attached by a curly cord, with a keyboard on the face.

3. Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection to “Instant Text”. Type whatever you want to display, Hit Enter to submit. You can now either throw it up on the sign by selecting “Run w/out save” or you can add more pages to it by selecting “Add page”

** HACKER TIPS ** Should it will ask you for a password. Try “DOTS”, the default password.

In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed it. However if they did, never fear. Hold “Control” and “Shift” and while holding, enter “DIPY”. This will reset the sign and reset the password to “DOTS” in the process. You’re in

Girl jailed for 1 tag!

Full story here: Cheyane Back being sentanced 3 months jail for one tag.

I bet if she had played Aussie Rules Football she wouldn't be in this situation. She could sexually harass anyone she wants. She could go on a rampage, She could beat the shit out of people, She could go on huge drug binges and still have people throw money at her and if she is lucky the AFL would keep her name clean.

She can do all this and more as an AFL player and stay out of jail so im sure if she played Football the judge would have thrown this out of court.

Welcome to the South Side of Milwaukey!?

Milwaukee- Yes, it's cold. As a matter of fact it's cold 8 months out of the year and unless you enjoy binge drinking; watching washed up bands at Summerfest; and bratwurst; the other 4 ain't so great.
Some us also like to paint - and a few are actually good at it. Been enjoying this work from the view from my studio.
